Third World Women

Introduction

Why learn about Third World Women's Health?

Multicultural education must inform students and create an appreciation for diverse cultures throughout the world, not just those cultures present in the United States. The health issues of people from other countries, especially women from underprivileged or Third World countries, are seldom studied in any depth. We live and work in a global society and must also learn to work with people of other nations, especially those struggling with basic health needs.

Who should be interested in this website?

Anyone interested in working on health issues, or people who are just interested in learning about health issues can benefit from this website. If you are considering working with women's health in another country, you will hear about the experiences of health professionals who have gone before you. Even if you do not planning on working overseas, or even working with health, you can benefit from this information. If you are planning on working in the United States, you will hear about working with people who face structural barriers to good health: things like poverty, gender discrimination, the isolation of rural areas, and low literacy. Understanding how these create barriers to making good choices can help you work with people more effectively.

What will I get out of this website?

You will learn about some of the health issues that women in Third World countries face. You will also hear from health professionals who have worked in other countries, and hear about the types of programs they worked on. Finally, the health professionals talk about their own biases they discovered while working with international communities. Examining our own values and biases is a crucial part of multicultural education. We must be able to critique ourselves and our ways of interaction with others, both within and outside of the practice of health education if we want to effectively help people of other countries improve their health.
